SAFOBS seeks to address the insurance needs of the members of burial societies, social clubs and their dependents through a unique and affordable co-operative
All the member-burial societies of the SAFOBS consider it important to stay close to their members. All our member-burial societies are democratically controlled and collectively owned by their members, to ensure that they continue to operate primarily for the benefit of their members.
Seeking to maximize of profit is not a proper objective for burial societies, although we recognise the crucial importance of building financial reserves from the surplus we generate annually as burial societies. We aim to use a part of our burial society surplus to improve the social wellbeing of our members and our communities through activities such as care for the sick and sponsoring care for children.
In searching for ways to augment our financial reserves, we are concerned not to jeopardise our historical values and principles of burial societies, particularly as they affect the mutual relationship with our members who remain the principal reason for their existence and operation.
Through SAFOBS we aim to work together as burial societies to:
- Promote the concept and practice of burial society
- Minimise the costs of funerals
- Support burial societies by improving services to their members
- Build unity and solidarity of burial societies.
- Empower members through socio-economic projects
- Liase with government at all spheres
